Body image affects both genders alike and for men, and man boobs is a condition that affects many men. Man boobs (gynecomastia) is enlarged breasts and although it is physical most men experience harmful psychological affects. It’s a condition that will lower self-esteem and cause emotional distress. Unfortunately, a lot of stereotypes about men’s emotional state tell them they shouldn’t feel this strongly about body positivity.
However, it can’t be swept under the rug because male body shaming is real. In fact, TV shows like Roadies have touched on the body shaming of man boobs with men. Dr. Anup Dhir, Cosmetic and Aesthetic Surgeon comments, “Having gynecomastia, or man boobs, is sufficient to cause significant deficits in general health, social functioning, mental health, self-esteem, and eating patterns.”
If you’ve developed gynecomastia in puberty then Dr Anup Dhir assures it can be treated within six months to a year. You shouldn’t get surgery when your body is still going through growth and hormone changes. He says, “There may be a growth of breast tissue if the surgery is performed before puberty is completed.”
After puberty, cosmetic surgery is the most common and safest treatment. Dr. Dhir states, “The enormity of the surgery depends mostly on the severity of breast enlargement and whether there is also excess amount of fatty tissue. It can easily be corrected surgically after removing the excess fat and glandular tissue by liposuction and excision.” This surgery is low risk for infection or scarring, but you will need to take it easy for a couple days.
The results will be permanent, but that means you should still have and active and healthy lifestyle. Man boobs will reappear if there is significant weight loss steroid use, or drugs that affect your testosterone level.
As with any cosmetic procedure interview a professional to get all of your questions answered about the treatment procedure.
